Interview Beverly Vicks -- part5/5 -- Finish

Part 5 of 5 SHOW (English version is available right after Spanish version)

Me niego a mojarme.

ENGLISH VERSION

In the judgments can be mistaked the presentation with the quality of the Animal?
  • If I understand the question correctly, good handlers can present an average dog and make him look above average. A bad handler can take an above average dog and make him look average (or worse). The handler’s job is to make the judge see his dog’s qualities and hide his faults. The judge’s job is to see the dog beyond the handling... whether good or bad handling. The problem is that the judge has only 2 to 2.5 minutes per dog to evaluate and make his placements. This is why a good handler can sometimes fool the judge into thinking his dog is better than it really is. When I judge, I try my best to see past the handling... whether good or bad... to see the dog and judge only on the quality of the dog.

Now a days, the Akita movement that could be seen on the shows looks like a Setter, could you explain how Akita should move?
  • The Akita standard calls for “moderate angulation” and “strides of moderate length”. Handlers seem to think that if they race around the ring it will make their dog look better..... it doesn’t. The Akita should be moved at a moderate trot and on a loose lead. The dog should NOT race out in front of the handler like a German Shepherd or Setter. Proper Akita movement is moderate strides... moderate speed... with power and agility.

How should Akita movent be judged?

  • To that question, I will answer thusly. An Akita should be moved on a loose lead at a moderate speed. The akita should not be raced around the ring at top speed. A good moving dog will move well at a gait at any speed. A poor moving dog only looks worse when the handler tries to cover the poor movement by racing him around. A dog who covers more ground at each stride than is “moderate” is moving incorrectly for an Akita. The standard states “strides of moderate length.” This does NOT mean covering ground like a Setter, German Shepherd, or Rottweiler.

There is any way to train or improve their movement?
  • Yes. You can train your dog to move appropriately. Make him think about his footsteps.... He should learn to move with his handler at a moderate speed and on a loose lead.

We would love to have an explanation of how should be the front angles, the solders, the cross and the standing position.
  • The front (shoulder) angulation and the rear (rump) angulation should be equal... balanced. If the shoulder is angulated properly and set-on properly, the elbow will fall directly under the line of the back of the neck. If the rear angulation and bend of stifle are correct, the rear foot will fall just beyond the rump.

Talk about what you see on the shows these days, what should be improve ( either the dogs or organizations), what is the best way to show up the dog, in what details put more attention and all those stuffs…..
  • Organizations should uphold the rules regarding artificial coloring and changing the dog. ...I don’t understand the rest of the question.... Each dog club has it’s own way of putting on a show. They are all good.. some better than others. I like the way FCI has the judge give an evaluation of each dog... although it takes much too much time... but it makes the judge give a reason for liking or not liking a dog. This is good.

What do you enjoy most on the rings and what do you less enjoy?.
  • I love the dogs and the people. I don’t enjoy judging outside in bad weather... I don’t do rain!!

When dogs are judged, for sure, need to follow the Standard, but there are things (physical or not) can not be judged but somehow "score", even more than that, they left you with a very good feeling even though when is not the wining dog. What are these things? How do you define it? How do we find them?
  • For most dogs it’s overall balance and symmetry. It’s like art. It’s balance and the lines of the painting, the painter’s stroke of the brush, that make it great or not. For the Akita it’s his attitude. He should exude confidence, dignity, and strength.

Ignoring the obvious, what distinguish an Akita from other races? What does the Akita have that none else does. And what is losing that decrease that exclusive property of this race.
  • The Akita has had the dignity and nobility that is comparable to no other breed. He is losing this dignity as we make him a pet. It is not dignified to beg for the bait in the ring. It is not noble to wag the tail as the judge approaches. As we make him suitable for this litigious society, we take away what he once was. He is becoming common, ordinary, and conventional.

Any reflection about the Akita World?
  • God is great; Dogs are good; People are crazy!!

Interview Beverly Vicks -- part4/5 --

Part 4 of 5 LINEAGE (English version is available right after Spanish version)-

ENGLISH VERSION

Akita is a breed with a big variety of types (some more stylish and slender, others short and stout, etc. ...) should they not be a little more uniform, or in the other hand it enriches the race?
Yes, there should be more consistency of type within the breed, but there isn’t. It’s up to the breeders to bring that consistency about. Breeders need to get past their personal viewpoints and breed to correct type.... but they won’t.

What is your type or preference of Akita (big, small, bony, muscular, light, heavy, compact?)
My preference is to what I consider to be correct type. Large, but not giant. Heavy boned but not clunky. Solid muscle, certainly not fat or flabby. Compact in body with good length of leg under him. Thick, muscular neck.

When and How should we make Inbreeding or Linebreeding?
First you line breed to begin weeding out undesirable characteristics.... you breed aunt to nephew or uncle to niece or other similar pedigreed partners. When you are getting fairly consistent litters without any serious health problems, THEN you inbreed... father to daughter.... brother to sister... mother to son..... to lock in the gene pool.... when you do this, your phenotype is a true representative of your genotype... what you see is what you get. Offspring of this type breeding will breed true and consistent for generations after.

Should we use more often this kind of resource? What is the rule to follow? Would you give  us an advice, please.
The rule is that you always breed good quality to good quality... you be dead on honest in your evaluation of the breeding partners.... The breeding partners compliment each other and do NOT double up on faults...

Does the Akita have any Genetic problem? Is that why is assumed that the Akita is more propensity to certain diseases? Is the long coat a Genetic problem?
•             The Akita has no more genetic problems than most other breeds.
•             Long coat gene is a simple recessive gene. Both parents must carry to produce a long coated puppy. This is one of the genes that can be bred totally out with proper linebreeding/inbreeding. Thru prudent inbreeding & linebreeding, my Abrakadabra was totally clear of the long coat gene and would not produce a long coat, ever.

Interview Beverly Vicks -- part3/5 --

Part 3 of 5 PERSONAL TOUCH (English version is available right after Spanish version)-

·        NO

ENGLISH VERSION

DNA aside, when you breed, did you stimulate somehow the female and the puppies? Do you have any special way to treat or stimulate the puppies (physically or psychologically). Were there any situations that you look for at the time of birth and growing? (such us looking for extremely peaceful place, etc...)
·         I make sure the bitch gets the proper nutrition and vitamins when she is pregnant.
·         Her whelping area is away from the main business of the home, but close enough so she doesn’t feel abandoned.
·         I touch the pups a lot… holding them and moving them around from one teat to another when they are nursing, making sure the little pups get the fuller teats. This also gives you the opportunity to learn each pups personality. Which is the more dominant and which the more submissive.
·         As the pups grow, they get plenty of interaction with people and new circumstances. When they are two and three weeks old they come into the busy area of the house to walk around with the mother and play. The more mental stimulation you give pups at an early age, the smarter they will be.

Could you explain the routine for the female since she got pregnant until puppies were given away? Any supplements for the mom or the puppies?
·         Before she is bred, I supplement her food with fish or fish oil
·         Soon after breeding I supplement with multi vitamin and cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is natural source of protein and calcium needed for pups to grow strong and healthy.
·         Soon before whelping add a calcium/vitamin D supplement to help avoid eclampsia and help with uterine contractions.
·         After whelping continuing the multi vitamin and cottage cheese until weaning
·         Weaning the puppies, I made my own weaning formula with chicken and rice.

Once the puppies were born, for their growth and their education did you have any personal touch as for example let the father near, or let the father play with the mom and the puppies or don’t ever let the father to see them, or never letting people to visit the puppies or trying to take people to the puppies, etc.......
·         Yes, the pups will come to the busy area of the house beginning when they start walking around. They come to the family area with the mother. I had three children who loved to play with the pups and this helped develop the pups tolerance to children and being handled
·         Letting the father play with the pups depended upon the temperament of the dog. I let my Abrakadabra begin to play with pups when they were about 6 or 7 weeks of age. Abra had a wonderful male temperament and would behave with pups the way I would expect a male Akita to behave. He would not play with them but would allow them to meet him and teach them that he is the dominant male and they were not.  An important lesson for Akitas to learn.
·         When people come to visit, anytime after the first week, I allow them to hold and play with the pups... it’s good for all

What we must not forget when we raise and educate a young Akita?
·         That he is never the boss.... you are, and that is is a dog. He is an animal, not a human in fur coat. He must do as you say, there is no other way.

Is everybody able to have an Akita?
·         NO

What are the mistakes that people makes when they buy their first Akita? Or what are the points that we, as new owners, should work on?
·         The most common mistake is to NOT meet both the mother AND father. To interact with both parents and other Akitas of the same breeder if possible. People meet and fall in love with a cute little teddy bear puppy and maybe meet the mother who may be quite sweet, but don’t have the opportunity to meet the father and see that, perhaps, he is not so sweet. They take a male puppy and are surprised to find him challenging their authority when he turns a year old or so.

How do you recommend Akita’s socialization with other dogsFrom what age should they start their socialization and how is the best way to start? Meaning, what was your way to educate and socialite an Akita to keep their “Speceial Akita Skills”?
·         Starting early with socializing with the mother then an adult male to teach them respect. Bring the pup to early puppy kindergarten classes if they are available or fun match shows where they can meet and play with other dogs of any breed, but certainly other Akitas.

In each stage of their life’s, from the puppy until become adulthood dogs they must do a certain amount of exercise. Tell us a little bit for the physical development of dogs.

What types of exercises are good to develop good muscles and what kind of exercises to do at different stages of their development.
·         Akitas should be genetically sound and strong of muscle and bone. If they are genetically prepotent to have strong muscles, then moderate exersize of running and playing with you and their “mate” (another akita of opposite sex) is enough. My Akitas lived most of their lives in kennels 20 feet long by 8 feet wide. They would run up and down the kennel playing with the dog in the next run. A couple times a week, each pair would be placed in an open (fenced) yard about 1/4 acre where they could really run and stretch their legs. That’s the only exersizing I did with my dogs. They were “tight muscled” genetically. Some Akitas are soft muscled and require constant excersize or treadmill to harden the muscle. My dogs were not that way. Original akitas were farm dogs and hunting dogs. When they were not hunting they laid around the farm. They were genetically hard muscled dogs, requiring little to keep them in shape. They were never fat.

And once they become old?
·         As they age, they require you to keep them fit. An older dog should be walked every day at a brisk pace. When Ben (Ch Tobe’s Return of the Jedai) was 10 he ran on the beach two or three times a week.... running became slower as he got older.

We would like to know your opinion about the feed and ways to do it. (How to do it, how many times, supplements, fodder or natural human food, etc…)
·         The Akitas that lived in my house got lots of human food. I spoiled them and they were fed from the table. Dogs that lived in the kennel got a good dry kibble. Supplements were for breeding times, or sometimes bringing in a coat for show.
